April is dog appreciation month and what better time to celebrate the canine companions in our life. Of course, many adventures in literature aren’t complete without a furry sidekick and here are just three dogs from books who just love a bit of adventure.
Fang from Harry Potter
Ok, so maybe Fang isn’t the sort of dog who goes looking for adventure, in fact it’s quite the opposite at times. Fang is the huge dog who belongs to the even bigger groundskeeper at Hogwarts, Hagrid. Although Hagrid has encounters with many dangerous and fierce animals throughout the series of books by JK Rowling, Fang is his trusty dog, who always seems to be about when Hagrid and his friends get caught up in some adventure or other. However, he is something of a big coward whose size belies his lack of courage.
Snowy from The Adventures of Tintin
Always by Tintin’s side throughout all is adventures, Snowy and Tintin actually have conversations with each other in the original comic book series. Known for his quick wit and powers of deduction, Snowy is faithful and although small in stature, enjoys his food.
White Fang from White Fang
The title character from Jack London’s novel, White Fang is a tough dog who has had to be that way due to the treatment he has received from other dogs growing up. He is part wolf, part dog but his wild streak is tamed by a series of masters, however not all of them are the most caring of owners. It is Weedon Scott who eventually wins White Fang’s trust and loyalty.
